• 0 GS 44 Essentia prolongs World Champion title at ORC Worlds

    0.00 of 0 votes

GS44 Essentia today became second time World Champion in Porto Cervo  Class B with 27 boats enrolled leaving behind four Swan 42s in the top 6.   In Class A Karl Kwok's (HKG) TP52 BEAU GESTE, driven by Ken Read (USA) and guided by tactician Gavin Brady (NZL), were among the early favorites but had not raced in an ORC Worlds since 2018 when they won Class A in that year's Worlds. The 9th place earned in the non-discardable Offshore race was due to a filling breeze that favored the slower boats in the class, but the remainder of their scorecard was impressive with 3-1-1-1-1-2 in the inshore races. This pushed them out on top of the standings where they stayed In Class C there was a similar dominance by one team, who were also past ORC World Champions. Ott Kikkas's (EST) Italia 11.98 SUGAR 3 won the 2019 Worlds in Sibenik, Croatia with this boat and were runner's up in last year's Worlds in Tallinn, so they too were favorites coming into the event. • 0 Tre Golfi Sailing Week 2022: More than 100 boats entered!

    0.00 of 0 votes

More than 100 boats entered! With 76 days to go until the start of the Tre Golfi Sailing Week 2022, the entry list has already passed the 100 mark. The race will take place from 14 to 21 May 2022- The Maxi European Championship has broken at least one record before it even gets underway, as it prepares to welcome the largest fleet of maxi yachts ever assembled in the waters of the Gulf. The largest yacht of the fleet so far is Arca, measuring 30 metres in length and with a beam of 5 metres. Formerly known as Skandia, she claimed victory in the Sydney Hobart in 2003 and in the Barcolana two years later. Like so many thoroughbreds of a certain age, she lay half-abandoned until Furio Benussi and his "Fast & Furio Sailing Team" decided to bring her back to winning form, radically modifying the hull and renaming it after Italian sponsor Arca Fondi sgr. First across the line at the Giraglia in 2021, Arca is aiming, at the very least, for line honours in the 67th edition of the Tre Golfi. From a boat with a long history to another in its first season, in the form of the new My Song, owned by Pier Luigi Loro Piana, an 80-footer designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian. Meanwhile, three similarly-sized Wally yachts also boast several nautical miles under their respective belts: Lyra, a Frers 78 owned by Canadian Terry Hui, several times division winner in the Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo in recent years; Ryokan 2, a Farr 80 owned by France's Philippe Ligier, and Highland Fling, a Reichel / Pugh 82 owned by Lord Irvine Laidlaw. Also among the favourites are two pure racers: the M72 North Star owned by Peter Dubens, a member of CRV Italia who will take part in the Championship flying the colours of the organising club, and the M74 Jethou owned by Sir Peter Ogden, with America's Cup tactician Brad Butterworth on board. Turning to the oxymoron of the mini-maxi yachts, 10 of 60-80 feet have already enrolled. Stars among the Mylius yachts designed by Alberto Simeone will certainly include Cippa Lippa X, owned by Guido Paolo Gamucci, with its futuristic canting keel, and Fra Diavolo owned by Vincenzo Addessi, with a strong crew including a mix of professionals and corinthians sailors. In the Wally class, meanwhile, a match-race battle is expected between Boabunda, owned by Argentinian Lucas Massa, and Walliño, owned by Benoît de Froidmont, President of the IMA. Finally, let's not forget the Swans of yesteryear, who remain a clear and present danger when they find the right conditions. Last year Shirlaf, a splendid and combative Swan 65 launched in 1976, handed out lessons to yachts some 40 years younger. The Tre Golfi Sailing Week starts on 14 May, 2022 with the 67th edition of the Tre Golfi Regatta, a 150-mile course touching on Naples, Ponza, Li Galli and Capri. The week then continues in Sorrento with coastal and windward-leeward racing for the Maxi European Championship, the ORC Mediterranean Championship and the Campionato Nazionale del Tirreno. www.tregolfisailingweek.com - info@tregolfisailingweek.com

Entry registration now open for 2022 ORC Mediterranean Championship This event is positioned as a prelude to the ORC Worlds in June in Porto Cervo Registration is now open for Tre Golfi Sailing Week, sponsored by Rolex, and held over 14-21 May 2022. This event will include racing for the 2022 ORC Mediterranean Championship, the 67th edition of the Regata dei Tre Golfi, and the 2022 Maxi European Championship. The racing venue for this event is in the Bay of Naples between Sorrento and Capri, with shoreside activities being based in Sorrento, a beautiful village and its surroundings known worldwide for its scenery and attractions, with plenty of hotels and accommodation alternatives available for all budgets. The area is easily connected to Naples by road and ferries, thus rendering logistics much easier than being based on an island. The 2022 ORC Mediterranean Championship will comprise one long-distance race on the same course of the 150-mile Regata dei Tre Golfi (starting on Saturday 14 May) and, from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 May, up to five windward-leeward races on the usual courses in the waters between Sorrento and Capri. Yachts will be hosted in one of the three marinas in the city at Piano di Sorrento, providing all services to yachts and where the race village will be located. Social events will be open to participants in both the ORC series and the Maxi Europeans. “The ORC Mediterranean Championship was established a year ago and subsequently abandoned,” said CRV Italia Vice President Maurizio Pavesi. “Re-establishing such a prestigious trophy is a great honor to us and we at CRV Italia are confident the event will be attractive to all racers, including participants who are also in training before the ORC World Championship hosted in Porto Cervo in June.” For the Notice of Race and Registration, visit the event website at www.tregolfisailingweek.com.
