Team New Zealand judged their return to the water on Thursday a success as they resumed testing and development, using their social distancing alarm devices. The America’s Cup defenders had their boatbuilders back in action on Tuesday as a return to level 3 eased working restrictions introduced to guard against the coronavirus pandemic. Now desperately behind with their plans following the five-week lockdown at level 4 they have sought advice from the government and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to get back on the water. The got clearance from the coast guard and the harbour master. Team New Zealand sent a crew of four out on their scaled down test boat Te Kahu. They reduced their staff on support boats. The sailors were wearing the new safety devices that have been developed over the last two weeks with the technology partner, Dunedin-based Igtimi. The battle against Covid-19 has sparked an impromptu technical innovation with their technology partner Zealand and Igtimi, a GPS tracking and big data company based in Dunedin, to create personal separation and contact tracing tags that sends out an alarm when the wearer is too close to a colleague.       An ultra wide band positioning system of personal tags was developed that accurately measures the distance between people. Worn by team member, the tags are programmed to react by flashing, beeping and vibrating when a pre-programmed perimetre is intersected. The interactions between the two tags (or people) are then logged for contact tracing purposes. More info & video

Professional and recreational sailors will face off against each other last Monday 23 March from 12:02 UTC in Virtual Regatta's The Great Escape, a virtual race from La Rochelle to Curaçao in the Caribbean. Professional sailors such as Sam Davies, Armel Le Cleac'h, Boris Hermann and Jeremie Beyou will participate in the race and millions more will have the opportunity to race against them. eSailors will be able to choose from one of four well known offshore boats - the Ultim, IMOCA, Class 40 and the Figaro 3. The weather conditions within the game will replicate the real-life conditions across the route and the estimated time of arrival for the first boat is 31 March. Virtual Regatta, the leading digital sailing platform, has offered all players the VIP status. This will grant the eSailors with extended weather trajectory forecasts over 120 hours, the ability to display 100 friendly boats instead of 50 and customisation of the base map. Head to Virtual Regatta Offshore to register - www.virtualregatta.com/en/offshore-game/ Virtual Regatta started in 2010 as a small team of passionate designers, engineers, and entrepreneurs gathered around the idea that virtual sailing sports games can mix with real races and real skippers.  Virtual Regatta is an online strategy game for those passionate about offshore sailing and real time regattas!

We have visited the Maxi 82 by Farr Yacht Design in Portugal. Longobarda was a breakthrough IOR maxi that set a new standard in the class during 1989 until the early 1990s. She was the product of a successful combination of Bruce Farr design talent, SAI Ambrosini (Italy) build quality and a no-expense-spared budget, courtesy of her owner, Italian yachtsman Gianni Varasi (who had previously owned Raul Gardini's earlier yacht, Il Moro di Venezia II). Now refitted into a fast performance cruiser The reportage you can find via this link: https://tinyurl.com/vax7nlz

Sir Peter BlakeIt's been 18 years since The Ocean Race legend, Sir Peter Blake passed away. Blake competed in a hat-trick of Races as skipper - finally achieving his dream of lifting The Ocean Race trophy at the fifth attempt, with Steinlager 2 in 1989-90. That win made history as the first New Zealand-flagged boat to win The Ocean Race, and the manner of victory left an indelible mark on the Race. Blake led Steinlager 2 to a clean sweep in the most dominant campaign in the Race's near-50 year history, winning every single one of the six legs - the first time that feat had been achieved since 1981-82, when the Race comprised four stages. The journey to victory had been a long one for Blake, who first competed in the Race as a 24-year-old crew onboard Burton Cutter in the 1973-74 edition. That experience proved the beginning of a 16-year obsession with the Race - he famously went on to describe the competition as something that 'gets in your blood... and you can't get rid of it' - and by the time the 1989-90 edition came around, Blake was ready to take a radical and risky step in search of victory. His idea for Steinlager 2 was to build the biggest and heaviest yacht in the Race, carrying 20 percent more sail area than its rivals. True to Blake's luck in the race up to that point, the initial yacht built had to be scrapped at the fitting-out stage after large areas of the high-tech carbon fibre-moulded hull were found to have delaminated. The delay cost two months of preparation, almost putting paid to Blake's campaign. But once the Race began, there was no stopping Blake and his crew on Steinlager 2 as they swept all before them, culminating in a legendary battle into their home port of Auckland, against fellow NZ boat, Fisher & Paykel, led by Grant Dalton. As the pair raced into the City of Sails, just a mile separated the boats, and a match race was underway. The battle that ensued was one of the most memorable in sailing history, as Blake got the better of his opponent to steal the honours in his hometown. www.theoceanrace.com   Sir Peter Blake was also a passionate and relentless champion for the environment, having spent his life on the ocean. Following his sailing career he turned his focus to helping protect the environment and raising awareness of the issues it faces, by voyaging to "environmental pulse points of the planet" and sharing what he discovered. He visited Antarctica to look at climate change, and then to the Amazon to look at the impacts of deforestation.  Tragically, Sir Peter was killed while carrying out this work. His death cut short his vision to allow millions of people around the world to care more about the environment and take action to protect it. The Sir Peter Blake Trust (BLAKE) was established in 2004 and is dedicated to continuing his environmental leadership legacy. We do this by inspiring environmental passion in people through life-changing adventures and programmes that follow in the footsteps of Sir Peter himself. https://blakenz.org/about-us

Farr 40 Worlds While some may claim beginners luck, the first place team, Far Niente, of the 2019 Farr 40 World Championship earned their win with an amazing team and by going back to the fundamentals. Brand new to the Farr 40 class, Vince Brun and Drew Freides, Far Niente co-owners, have only been sailing in the fleet for 10 days prior to taking the win in Long Beach, California this week from Wednesday, October 2 to Saturday, October 5, 2019. Closely behind Far Niente was 2018 World Champion Wolfgang Schaefer's Struntje Light, finishing with 36 points, only three points behind Freides/Brun. In third was Jeff Carter's Edake with 41 points. The regatta took place in the waters off Long Beach, generally south of Alamitos Bay Harbor. On Wednesday, the sailors embraced the 20 knot conditions. As the regatta carried on, the average breeze filled in at 10-12 knots daily. While the scoresheet generally stayed pretty consistent, Friday's racing allowed for Far Niente to really pull ahead and claim their win. "We were on fire," Freides started. "Some of our closest competition struggled a bit, whether it was the kelp or just bad luck. We got off the line really well and controlled our own destiny." Schaefer and his crew spent day three of the regatta struggling in the Southern California kelp, allowing Far Niente and several other boats to make their gains. Even with five bullets in their scoresheet, the conditions were not on their side. Other noteable boats on the water were Rob Davis' Nutcracker, who came in fourth, and Rick Goebel's Insanity. Both teams were kept in the top of the fleet, taking several seconds, thirds and fourths. Goebel even took a bullet in race 7. Jeff Carter, skipper of Edake and now two-time Corinthian World Champion, acknowledged the dedication and commitment of his crew from Australia and congratulated the Long Beach Yacht Club and Farr 40 Class for an amazing event.
